Chapter One — The Grand Tour

"In the eighteenth century, an education wasn't finished in a classroom — it was finished on the road."

The Grand Tour was a rite of passage for young aristocrats in the eighteenth century: an extended trip through Europe, often lasting months, taken to complete an education no classroom could finish. Travelers moved from city to city — Paris, Geneva, Vienna — studying language, architecture, and history, and treating beauty as something worth crossing a continent for. The trip almost always ended in Italy, where Rome, Florence, and Venice held the art considered the pinnacle of the whole education — places where beauty was treated as invaluable, a concept the modern world has mostly lost.

In 2023, I made my own version of it. I moved to Cortona, a small town outside Florence, to study it properly, and spent several months in museums across Italy until fashion and art history stopped feeling like separate subjects to me. Both come down to the same instinct: chasing the one right hand for every commission, the one cut that gets a silhouette right.

The real discovery was coming home to New York and realizing the Grand Tour never ended — it just got faster. Gallery opening Tuesday, a flight to Miami for a weekend, back at her desk downtown by Monday. That's the Grand Tour now. It's just called a Tuesday.

Valvella is built at that intersection — old-world craftsmanship, moving at a New York woman's pace. The Stops below are the real cities on that route: four dresses, each named for a place travelers once stopped to study beauty.
